I love teaching the parts of a book to my younger students. I always start with my video How Books Are Made / Parts of a Book (Watch it below!) but I don’t tell them that it’s my voice they’re hearing. I really get a kick out of watching their faces as they start to figure it out!
After we watch the video, I “quiz” them about the parts of a book. I usually pick one of my favorite picture books off the shelf (This week’s choice was Wolfie the Bunny by Ame Dyckman) and have students call out the different parts as I point. They love showing off what they’ve learned!
Of course, no lesson is complete without a fun follow-up activity! I like to keep it simple with this lesson since the video and discussion take about 15 minutes of our class time. A simple coloring sheet where students can match up the parts of a book is just right!
You can get your hands on this resource at my TPT store! It includes three different options to choose from based on your students’ needs. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
